Rough Living

The tips in the first part of the book are more than tips. You get a sense of the road and what it might be like to live rough. Damitio doesn't pretty up the facts. This is rough living and no doubt about it and you'll learn what you need, what gets you by and what makes it worthwhile. There's even a section for recipes that includes a way to cook cattails among other interesting dishes.

Technically, there's not a lot to trip you up. You won't stumble along and wonder why you're reading it. Most of it is pretty interesting, even the tips. If you like reading about self-sufficiency or traveling or overcoming your own fears, read Rough Living. Even better, the stories will make you laugh, wonder what you've missed, or make you think twice before you set out to live rough.

The first third of Rough Living is advice on how to make it in the world on little or no money, as a vagabond. Author Vago Damitio details ways to live, and sometimes live quite well, with very little but your own skill, knowledge and ingenuity. The second two thirds is dedicated to true stories that took place in his life, or in the lives of others and told to Vago in the simple sharing of life's history.

Along the way, meet a few other vagabonds, also living rough and doing it their own way. You'll be surprised at the stories you read and the people you meet in this collection of tales.

It is in the role of story teller that Vago shines. Stories range from humorous to raw and nothing is held back, from hitching rides to dodging a murderous dog catcher. The vagabond tips are good though, and you'll learn a thing or two, even if you've lived rough a few times yourself.

Be sure to read our interview with Vago C. Damitio.

Vago C. Damitio is a itinerant novelist, travel writer, social media geek, bumbling father, grumbling husband, and amateur anthropologist. He lives in North Africa but comes originally from the Pacific Northwest of the USA. His hometown is Kailua located on the island of Oahu. In his spare time, Vago travels, writes, takes photos, and plays with his infant daughter. All of his time is, in fact, spare time.
