The Assassin’s Mistress by J. H. Bográn

Review by MJ Logan

Book cover image of The Assassin's MistressLength: 3500 word short story.
Rated: 4.5 out of 5 stars
Genre: Crime Thriller
Inside: Deception, love, murder and a twisted destiny.

Hit-man Robert Prescott rescues Chantal, a strange and beautiful woman, from certain death. Together, they discover love and passion while hiding their relationship from her uncaring and abusive husband. At the same time, Robert hides his profession from his new love, but finds that life is never simple and that the twists and turns of destiny will turn their love affair inside out.

The Assassin's Mistress is a great, quick read that holds your attention from the first word to the last. J. H. Bográn wastes no time taking us from a hero's rescue to the budding love affair that cannot help but end in disaster. What will happen when Chantal learns of his profession? Will she regret her involvement with him, or will love prevail? The questions go unanswered until the very end.

This crime thriller feels more like a suspenseful spy novel. There's intrigue, suspense and secrets. The suspense plays out in slow motion and you can almost see what's coming and brace for it, but you're never quite sure what will happen next, and then...

Bográn's well crafted thriller reads easily from beginning to end. There is little to interrupt the reader with very few technical flaws that distract from the reader's experience. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys a quick read with a good plot that includes surprising twists and turns.

“José Bográn's short story "The Assassin's Mistress" is an unusual, gripping and surprisingly fun ride on a killer roller coaster.”
